Hammertoe Q & A

What are the symptoms of hammertoe?

Hammertoe refers to contracture or abnormal bending of one or more of your toes at the first joint (also called the proximal interphalangeal joint). Hammertoe is a progressive foot deformity that causes a number of different symptoms as the condition worsens. These symptoms include:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Pain or irritation when wearing shoes
  • Corns and calluses
  • Restricted joint movement
  • Pain in the ball of the foot

Hammertoe prevents the affected toe from pointing straight, and it can make your normal footwear painful or otherwise uncomfortable. As the condition advances, the affected toe becomes more rigid and painful to move.

How do you get hammertoe?

Hammertoe is caused by an imbalance to the soft tissues in your toes. This imbalance increases pressure to the tendons, muscles, and joints in your toe, resulting in the abnormal bending. A number of factors can contribute to the development of hammertoe. Among them are:

  • Heredity
  • Trauma
  • Arthritis
  • Ill-fitting shoes

Many people are at a higher risk of getting hammertoe because of the natural structure of their feet. Others experience conditions like arthritis or toe injuries that lead to the formation of hammertoe.

In some cases, wearing shoes that are too tight can squeeze and increase pressure on the toes, eventually leading to hammertoe.

What treatments are available?

Treatment for hammertoe varies depending on your symptoms and the severity of your deformity. The expert podiatrists at Foot Healers offer a number of effective conservative treatments for hammertoe, including:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Orthotics
  • Cortisone injections
  • Padding and taping
  • Footwear changes

The goal of conservative treatment is to relieve your pain and slow down the progression of your hammertoe. Because hammertoe is a progressive condition, it's important to seek medical care at the first signs of trouble. Conservative treatment is most effective during the early stages of the condition.

What if I need surgery?

If you experience severely restricted joint movement or persistent pain, you may need surgery. The goal of surgery is to restore normal alignment of your toes and eliminate your pain.
