Summer has finally arrived which means it’s fungus season in St. Louis!
While it may not be what you’ve been looking forward to in the warmer months, athlete’s foot is much more common in warm weather. And no, you don’t have to be an athlete to get it.
Athlete’s foot is an infection caused by fungus that thrives in damp, dark areas such as showers, locker rooms and the insides of your shoes.
It produces itchy, dry, scaling skin, and in advanced cases, can cause inflammation and blisters.
Not the kind of thing you want to show off with your summer flip-flops.
Fortunately athlete’s foot is easy to treat and even easier to prevent.
- Warm and damp conditions.
- Poor foot hygiene
- Public places where going barefoot is common. (Athlete’e foot is contagious.)
How can you prevent it?
- Avoiding walking barefoot in public locker rooms and showers.
- Feet should be washed every day with soap and water, including between the toes.
- Keep your feet as dry as possible. If your feet sweat a lot you may need to change your socks during the day.
How can you treat it?
Antifungal powders, sprays and/or creams are often used to treat athlete’s foot. Your foot and ankle surgeon will recommend the best treatment for you.
